It has been crazy trying to catch up with everything....with the shop and shows I have been doing. But I am back to say "Hello" and a public thank you to a few people.

Do you know when you have those days that just start off on the wrong note? That was my morning yesterday.

Life: That afternoon, however, a client and friend, Joahna (who is so great about spreading the word about us) came in to pick up her products and told me her sister was about to have her baby. Joahna had brought her sister in to have me do her makeup awhile back so I definitely shared in the excitement and anticipation. As an uncle of two, I remember the first time I saw each of my nephews...the hope and joy you felt was unexplainable. I cannot wait to see the photos.

Laughter: Not too long after, a client who also became a friend, Olivia, came in to pick up her products. We jokingly call her the tornado because she usually runs in and out like one. However, she actually got a parking sticker (from a kind stranger), and we ended up having a blast. Anyone who knows me knows I virtually live and breathe products and can talk about it all day....well, so can she, and it's always great to share with someone who values your passions. Although not a tornado that day, she was a whirlwind through the boutique picking up all the things she liked from the samples she tried, which was also confirmed by many positive reviews....but of course, we only carry the best! All this between talk and laughter.

Friendship: Around the end of the day, my client to friend (yet again) ,Connie, came in. It's always a joy to see her ever-smiling face and to be around her. Such a kind heart! She came in to tell me she's about out of her face lotion, talked some about dating life, and started to play aorund the shop. What I love about Connie is how she is so open to try new things...although I did give her a lecture about how she used hotel soap when she ran out of her cleanser. We got some advanced skin care, and she walked around picking imported natural bath oils and salts, chic makeup palettes and a body sheen product...for herself? No, as gifts! Did I not tell you she has a good heart? So Connie, thank you, thank you , thank you! At the very least, I need to treat you to more Thai food!

I am also reminded of my beauty, Michelline, who surprised me with beautiful flowers after two treatments and custom products. To see and hear from her how her skin completely transformed and has never looked better in all her years was so very touching. I was walking on clouds for the rest of the day. Having skin concerns myself, I can't imagine a better life than to be able to help like this. Thank you for inspiring me even more.

So there you have it, no product focus or beauty advice - just some thank you to people like you who help to make my day. Life, Laughter, and Friendship - these are all things that Inspire true beauty.

Until next time, I hope to see each of you sooner than later.

www.fezstudio.net

Fez Studio

1125 NW 9th Ave

Portland, OR 97209

5 Stars

Perfumer Extraordinaire, Andy Tauer, got a look into the pre-print copy of the Luca Turin Book "Perfume: The guide" . One of our favorite scents, L'air du désert got 5 (out of 5 ) points and a full 1 page description which is rare in this book. If you are fascinated my the complexities if scents, it is highly recommended that you look at this book when is out ;-)

(as printed in Allure, April 2008, page 42 "Contributors"): Luca Turin wore the L'air du désert marocain at his wedding with Tania Sanchez!

For a Perfume Expert to wear this scent on such an occasion out of all that is available to him out there says a lot about "L'air".

About the Fragrance:

The scent: L'air du désert marocain is a true scent of desire. Inspired by the fragrant world of the Maghreb desert. Powerful, sensual and pure. This perfume for her and him is exciting and long lasting. It is the scenting canvas of a picturesque landscape, fascinating by its changing scents and lights.

The notes: The elegant head note is based on typical spicy scents of the Maghreb; coriander and cumin, joined with petitgrain. The warm heart note surprises with the fragrance of rock rose and a hint of jasmine. The body note is full of warm woods such as cedar wood, vetiver brilliantly joined with a fine amber background. A vision of the Maghreb.

The initial strength of this scent surprises some people, but when it is on your skin, various spice offerings are revealed enhancing your exotic sensuality. Since it lasts a long time, you will be transported to romantic lands where ever you go.

Tauer Perfumes are available at (503) 227-2226.

Fez Studio

1125 NW 9th Ave

Portland, OR 97209

Night Aura

I ventured out in good-ol' P-town with a good friend last night and of course, one of the things I pay attention to is how people apply their makeup for a night out. I saw a group of beautiful blond women looking a bit washed-out in evening light. Although they had many strengths in their features, they were not enhanced by the color (or lack of) that were used.

A lot of people with light hair or skin may be timid about putting on extras as there have been rules in magazines that speak such nonsense. First, we have to consider the colors that look best on you which depend on your undertone (whether you are more warm or cool in coloring...please contact me if you have a question about this). This is also balanced out by the undertone of your hair color. Another consideration is that evening light tends to be less harsh than day light and casts shadows differently on your facial curves and contours.

Because of this, when you where your daytime, neutral-toned matte at night, it becomes duller looking from the shadows that are cast. You do not need to completely change your foundation or most of your makeup. A little highlight goes a long way (whether through a slight dab of gloss on the middle of the lips, a little bit of glow on the cheeks with some subtle sheen on the eyelids or browbone) both on the face and body. This will help the soft or dark lighting hug and highlight the contours of your face better...allowing you not to blend into the background.

When you don't have a lot of light to work with, it becomes extra important for you to define your best feature(s), whether it's your lips, eyes or cheeks with an extra pop of color. For lips, it is generally safe to go about two shades deeper than your natural lip shade, but then again, there are no rules. You may find that just a dab of lip-enhancing gloss will do the trick. This especially works well with played-up eyes.

Please make sure to blend, blend, blend...as you do not want the appearance of streaks but a certain aura that is emphasizes your best.

503.227.2226

Fez Studio

1125 NW 9th Ave

Portland, OR 97209

RAVE, RAVE, RAVE!

Okay, you would think that after all of the products I have been around in my 11+ years in the industry, it would be hard for me to be truly surprised by much. I kept touching the skin as if it was new to me and always stop to look at myself in the mirror. I truly couldn't believe the quick results and the comfort I felt with my skin! Andy Tauer, a Zurich-based self-taught perfumer, has put his soul into some of the most beloved niche scents known by the fragrance explorers of the world. Not familiar with his work? You soon will be, as Fez Studio is honored to be one of the few places in the world to offer Mr. Tauer's unique offerings.

I invite you to take this very engaging fragrance journey with me, graciously guided by Mr. Tauer himself, and once again get excited about fragrant dreams and what it means to be a true original.

1. For those who are not familiar with you and your work, what is your background and how did your passion for fragrance begin?
Well, first I should admit that I have never seen a perfumery school from inside and that I am proud on this fact. I came to perfumery by chance, although my background as chemist with a PhD in molecular biology for sure helped me to find my way through some formula and to handle chemicals. Once I discovered that I can make perfumes myself, I started reading one book after the other about it, but Mandy Aftel’s “Essence and Alchemy” was the most influential. Amazingly enough: Although being a chemist, I started making fragrances initially only with naturals and learned to combine them with single synthetics later. Composing perfumes is much more difficult than one would think and I have learned a lot from Vero, Vero Kern, a perfumer herself who just launched her line last year. She has studied the art of making perfumes in Paris and has become a true friend with the years. I think the two of us are a perfect match, as our styles are different, but yet, we are working in the same traditional, artisanal fashion without compromising when it comes to our perfumes.

2. In such a short time, your perfumes have become a niche favorite around the world. What do you attribute to your success and sets you apart in such an overabundant fragrance market?
When looking back these three years since Tauer perfumes exist as commercial available line I cannot but smile. I smile because in a sense it is an absurd story. I made my first “commercial” fragrance for a friend, Pascal, who has a shop in Zurich where he sells books and Moroccan handicrafts. I was unemployed, rather comfortably writing job applications as we have a generous social welfare system here in Switzerland, and creating fragrances. Thus, Pascal asked me to create a fragrance for his shop, based on some Moroccan natural oils and absolutes. I worked for a long time on this scent that I centred around Moroccan rose and jasmine absolutes and the Cedar wood oil from the High Atlas. I baptized it “Le Maroc pour elle” and I made some 20 bottles for Pascal’s shop, and we fixed a price that was not really reflecting the exclusiveness of the fragrant raw materials.

Well, and then the bottles were in Pascal’s shop and we did not sell a lot. Thus, not selling the first one, we figured out we need a second one, and while working on the next one, I started a blog and discovered another blog. It was the journal of Luca Turin, the perfume critic. After reading his eloquent and wonderful critical articles, I was one day brave enough to send him my Le Maroc pour elle, and… he wrote about it! First on his blog and then in a magazine. And suddenly, we started to sell and got questions from other bloggers and without really planning it I and Pascal were faced with a global market place, where there seems to be some place left for niche in a niche in a niche perfumers.

Thus, in order to answer finally your question: I think part of what sets me and my scents apart is the fact that I am truly niche, that I do not compromise when it comes to scents, that I do not invest in marketing, and that I am simply driven by the joy of doing what I do.

3. What's have you noticed as some shared traits that Tauer Perfumes devotees may have in common?
Yes, there is a common trait: They are lovely human beings. I have met many last year when visiting the US and I felt very connected.
And then, I guess, they share this joy of exploring new scented ground, they care about where something comes from, they search for authenticity and they like being taken by the hand and let them seduce.

4. One of the things that attracted me to your line was the fact that you are PERSONALLY involved with each fragrance from start to finish. You even hand pour the scents into the bottles yourself. You are literally a single person company and this speaks volumes about your love and passion for your craft. If I can put in my two cents, it definitely shows in the results. Despite your success in the past few years, why have you chosen to remain small?
Simple answer: I am not good in book-keeping. Thus, I keep my accountings small.
Now a serious answer: There is a critical size limit when things start to change.. Once you are above this limit, you disconnect yourself from your business. I am always worried that I disconnect myself from the scents and ultimately hamper myself from coming up with new ideas. One example: I still mix my stock solutions myself, meaning I pour my millilitres of rose absolute and other materials into large aluminium cans. Doing so is like taking a bath in scents, and I find this involvement, this very intense and close contact, important for my work, for my creativity. Another factor: There are some fragrances like the Le Maroc pour elle that I can not produce in large amounts, simply because the raw materials are too difficult to get in good quality. Maybe another answer to your question might be that I have also chosen to grow slowly. It is not only about size, but also about speed. I want to make one step after the other, and while doing so I learn my lessons. I know too many who wanted to grow too speedy and get rich too fast….

And ultimately: I rather enjoy making more, different, exciting, thrilling, controversial and new fragrances, than thinking about ways to increase sales. You see…I am very much driving the selfish motives ;-)

5. You are also very selective about where your perfumes are carried and distributed. We are definitely proud to be one of the few places to offer them. What are some deciding factors that may lead you to work with some people over others?
I wish that my partners and me share an enthusiasm for what I do, for my scents and for perfumes in general. And I listen very much to my gut whether the time and place is right. And I look out for business partners that have –like me- patience and do not want to make a quick buck and then run away.

6. I know you use the best of pure raw materials without ready made building blocks. I imagine this would be quite time intensive. To date, which scent has taken you the longest to perfect?
Hmmmm (thinks and thinks)….this is hard to say because I do not always develop a fragrance linearly, in the sense that I start today working on its formula and then make one iteration after the other in a row until it is finished. I rather work on it up to a point where I do not come forward, let the whole soup sit, work on other themes and maybe come back later. Maybe. Sometimes I give up for a year or two, until suddenly I feel like having a good idea, then I rush to my bottles and mix enthusiastically, quite often just to see that the idea does not work.

Well, maybe the longest development was the Lonestar Memories. As I have worked on a leather theme since I create perfumes. But now that we are talking about it…I think I have to work on another leather!

7. This question may be a difficult one since you are involved in each the creation of each scent from the picture it draws in your mind to the finished product...but, if you had to chose, which is your current favorite scent.
I change my favourites daily ;-)
Today it is the Incense extrême that I have just launched.

8. What is the idea behind your bottle images and design
When it comes to bottles, I tend to be rather pragmatic. Tauer Perfumes does not stand for fancy and expensive bottles. I want my bottles to be affordable, simple and come in reasonable size. The design of the flyer going with the bottle and the design on the bottle itself is a little bit more critical to me. It is a very thin line. On one hand I want to express thoughts on a scent using a picture, and then I do not want to impose my pictures on others who might have totally different visions. Lucky me I have my blog: There, folks warn me from moving too far when it comes to visuals.

9. What is next that we may look forward to from the Tauer perfumes?
Well, I have Ford pick-up full of ideas in my head. Besides that, there is a scent built around Vetiver, a rather green and flowery take on it, that sits on my bench and waits patiently for the next step. It is finished, and I just need to make my mind up what to do next. Then there is a quite avant-garde fragrance, built on the idea of a mechanic after work, with hyacinths in his hand, a bunch of flowers for his beloved one. A lush flower scent with a leathery base including a hint of motor oil. This scent is travelling the world right now. Your readers may find out more visiting my website and look for the "bottle on a journey". And then there is the chypre....but there I am still suffering.

10. Where can our clients find more information about you and your line?
I recommend visiting my blog from time to time. I have started this very personal online journal almost 3 years ago and I talk about new developments, about my life and building a business on perfumery, and from time to time I ask my visitors to comment on new ideas, or I give away samples of fragrances under developments. I welcome your readers to contact me by e-mail, too.

This blog is one of the best ideas I came across when starting this business. It keeps me connected to a community of perfume lovers, it is a way of exchanging ideas, and sometimes folks bring me down to earth when I am in danger of flying off to far.

11. Finally, your recommendation to perfume lovers in search of the perfect perfume?
Never ever give up, and while searching enjoy the ones that come somewhat close to the ideal.

For more information on Andy Tauer and Tauer perfumes, please visit

web: http://www.tauerperfumes.com/

blog: www.tauerperfumes.com/blog

or contact us at: (503) 227-2226

Fez Studio

1125 NW 9th Ave

Portland, OR

97209

Happy Holidays!

It has certainly been a busy December for us at FEZ Studio. With events every week this month, it has been wonderful as we were able to give back to the community and several charities through the business...something I have always wanted to do.

It also allowed us the opportunity to meet even more genuinely good-hearted people and inspired us to do this on a more permanent scale. A question I get many times over is, what is the best red for me? 'Tis the season for red, right? Recently, it's been from my clients with red hair, some natural, some not, but a common problem for them is trying to find a red that doesn't make them look orange. The trick? Choose warmer bricks and rust tones. But red is also one of the most difficult colors to apply. However, no color warms and brightens your face more instantly, so it's worth it! Color is back in a big way. Here's a basic run-down of a red that will work best for you.

Wine reds - works best with warmer skin tones.

Blue reds - best for medium to cool complexions.

Coral reds - great for olive-skinned blondes and brunettes.

A lip brush is imperative for placement of color, because it allows you to apply the exact amount of color you want, placed exactly where you intend it. Lipsticks tend to be emollient so putting too much to your warm lips by applying it from a tube doesn't allow it to blend and adhere to your lips as well. It may also seem to thick. If you blot off the excess, you are creating a less defined mouth which is conter-productive to what most want from red lips.

Should you use a pencil? I most definitely recommend it for reds. It acts as a barrier against bleeding, keeps color in place and gives a more defined area to shade in the lips.

So don't be afraid and try it! And remember, there is a red for EVERYONE!

The Noir Collection by Julie Hewett Los Angeles specializes in reds for everyone!

Available at

Fez Studio

1125 NW 9th Ave

Suite 108

Portland, OR 97209

Harajuku Lovers Unite!

What to do on a rainy day in the Pearl?

Shop at FEZ Studio!

We have the unique Harajuku Lovers bags and accessories designed by GWEN STEFANI on sale for 40% OFF just in time for the Holidays. It is a location in Japan where the young dress in their own fashions they invent themselves. Most of the focus has been on the unique style of this subculture which has acquired unsurpassed global iconic status.

During my time in Japan, I was fortunate enough to be involved in the the style and beauty experience of the subculture first hand. Although Harajuku style is really not definable, there tends to be 3 major sub styles:

1. Gothic Lolita - in which the style is overtly, cute and feminine. This emphasizes chastity and cuteness.

2. Cosplay - short for costume play, this is the act of dressing up as fictional characters, but translated into fashion.

3. The Harajuku Style - which is basically the combination of several trends which draws influences from punk and goth. It's basically a way for people to participate and identify with the subculture without ascribing to a certain style or standard.

In the end, I believe the idea and fascination with Harajuku is definitely not just isolated to the Japanese. The place and styles have grabbed the attention of style icons because it represents beauty and style standards that are really undefined. If you look at Hollywood these days, there is a lot of sameness of people following trends. After a while, it becomes boring. This is why I won't carry mass-marketed products bought out by large corporations. We are not created from a mold and should have a place where people value our individuality.

Harajuku is a representation of creative expression and freedom. It's especially ironic that it originated from a place that has traditionally valued conformity. Now, it is about reinventing standards and making it your own.

FEZ Studio

1125 NW 9th Ave

Suite 108

Portland, OR 97209

Phone: (503) 227-2226

E-mail: fezbeauty@gmail.com

Love Your Skin? Important Read

Okay, I have held off long enough. After yet another customer came in with her skin "misdiagnosed" at the mall, it wouldn't be right of me to stay silent.

In this recent case, my client was asked by the sales associate what skin type she had. She said her skin was oily and they agreed after looking at some chart. There are no textbook answers. She came in to me with not only her "oily skin" conditions but redness and superficial flakes on her skin that was not there before...after spending hundreds on a full line of products.

Before I recommend anything, I prefer to use a skin analysis machine to help accurately determine your underlying skin conditions. I also incorporate a 200x skin magnification scope and a detailed skin/hair questionnaire. What did we end up finding out? Her skin was actually dehydrated. That's right! So, instead of harsh products that would dry out her skin as she had been recommended, we went to cold-processed healing repair and deep hydrating complexes (The Hydrating Serum and Peptide Hydrating Complex). These are concentrated products that will do its job by binding moisture and assimilating right into the skin. No more greasy film sitting on the surface. She came in only three days later to visit us and to show off her glowing skin! It made our day to see her so happy!

So everyone, for your skin's sake, please take advice from someone who has been inside the industry. Most sales associates are NOT skin experts! I have worked with people who sold shoes just a week before she started cosmetics. Usually, people start work for a line even before they receive formal training. Even when training is done, a minor part of it is focused on skin compared with the rest that's focused on how to increase sales with product points. To be state-certified in skin takes months, not three days.

So please, trust your skin to the right people. Although I would love for everyone to come to FEZ Studio, I'd be happy if you go to any place in town that treats your concerns as if they were your own and accurately assess your underlying conditions.

In addition, please also be careful of strong, prescription ingredients. High strength products and harsh, invasive procedures can sometimes do more harm than good. Skin already goes through so much on a daily basis. Please be kind and listen to it.

From someone who has suffered from skin problems since I was 12, I have deep empathy for anyone who are suffering with skin concerns. I always have the urge to take people into my chair and help them like I have never been helped growing up. I know I can't save everyone who falls for advertised hype with celebrities paid millions to say they use certain products. However, I hope this is a stepping stone to help people become more educated about skin and the actual benefits of the ingredients they are putting on.

If you have any current concerns about your skin, I welcome the opportunity to hear about them.

FEZ Studio

1125 NW 9th Ave

Suite 108

Portland, OR 97209

Phone: (503) 227-2226

E-mail: fezbeauty@gmail.com

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://fezstudio.blogspot.com/2007/12/important-read-if-you-love-your-skin.html' title='Love Your Skin? Like Fez Studio, Physical Element prefers to offer their selective customers exclusive unique products including offbeat, distinctive labels from Europe, Japan, as well as the United States ad Portland.

You can almost tell who is the Physical Element customer as opposed to the the mass-marketed consumer mall types. Her customers are true originals who are seen as trend setters. That's what we're about!

So ladies, if you want to lead, not follow, you know where to go!

1. For those who may not be familiar with your wonderful store, how would you describe "Physical Element"?

Physical Element was founded in the belief that clothing is an extension of a woman's personality and creativity.I search the globe for lines that blend art and fashion. At Physical Element, we specialize in the careful and thoughtful editing of European and domestic collections with a point of view. I am very happy to report that we are now the exclusive Portland retailer of Paris label, cop.copine.

2. What characteristics make clothing beautiful to you?

Beautiful fabrics and artful experimentation with shape and design. I love unexpected, but subtle details, as well as skillfully cut patterning that fits the body beautifully.

3. How has style preferences changed over the years since you opened in 2003?

Well, Physical Element has changed dramatically over the past 4 ½ years. When we opened in 2003, we were Portland's first women's fitness & yoga apparel store. Over the years, the store evolved to include fashion-forward European apparel. I was thrilled by the enthusiastic reaction by our customers and Pearl residents and slowly, the fashion portion of the store grew more and more. We had always carries elegant, directional activewear, but beginning in 2008, the store will focus all our attention on offering offbeat, distinctive labels from Europe, Japan, as well as the United States and Portland. My customers have been very enthusiastic and supportive of the change.

4. What is your favorite piece of clothing, right now?

Oh, that is a hard question! I suppose one of my favorite items right now would be the Emi skirt by Cop.Copine Paris. It’s a saucy little skirt that hits at your natural waist, is slim cut and finishes just below the knee. The Emi Skirt’s pinstriped outer layer rises ever-so-slightly in the back. The sheer ruffled underlayer is allowed to show off the back curve of your calf – so sexy! This skirt is so unabashedly feminine, even my UPS guy took note when I wore it - and he is a fellow of few words!

5. What role do you think makeup plays in fashion?

To me, fashion and makeup go hand in hand. Both are mediums with which we express ourselves and enhance our own beauty. I have difficulty imagining one without the other.

6. At FEZ Studio, we do make custom colors here, and many designers I have worked with envision colors and style of makeup to best represent their clothes. What type of look do you see when you look at your unique fall/winter lines?

I see a strong emphasis on the eye – either very smoky or with an unexpected strong color. The European palettes this year were very beautiful and neutral so bringing color into the makeup palette creates a wonderful drama! And of course, a beautiful foundation is key to any look.

7. What is your personal beauty routine?

I use mineral powder foundation which I love. Mineral makeup has improved the quality of my skin and reduces unpleasant breakouts. Since my lips are allergic to almost all lipsticks, I’ve compensated with a strong eye. I emphasize my eyebrows by defining them a little with dark eyeshadow. I like a grey, smoky eye so I use a combination of silvery greys and dark grey/blacks. I put a hint of color on my cheeks with a cream blush (peach). The only color my lips tolerate has been a lip gloss that uses only all natural products. I haven’t been able to pinpoint the source of my negative reactions. I so miss lipstick!

(Jo was quite happy to find out FEZ Studio has a pure mineral line that includes lipsticks. Many who have tried them have switched over from other mass-marketed mineral lines).

8. What is your definition of beauty?

Beauty is when a woman is completely comfortable and confident in her own skin. She is a woman who is unafraid of expressing her personal style and loves to experiment. It is relishing in our physical idiosyncrasies and celebrating them rather than trying to force ourselves into a mass-marketed image of beauty.

9. What do you feel are some advantages customers have by shopping independent and local as opposed to larger corporate "chain" stores?

Well, frankly we just care more than a large chain store does. The owners have a passion for what they do and customers benefit from their caring and knowledge. Sure, independent businesses are also trying to make a living, but we are in it for so many other reasons. We do what we do because we love it, and enjoy knowing all our customers. It’s the relationships we build that make it all worthwhile.

10. Well, having done a few runways myself, here is a a quick simple trick that will give you that model hair. Most importantly, it's translatable to everyday life.

Start with moose on wet hair. I personally like using the David Gardner Magical Mousse as it is literally a magic potion I keep in my kit for many needs. It adds volume and shine to straight styles as it also helps to hold and rejuvenate curls. Most importantly, it's rich with proteins to help protect from heat styling damage. You gotta love that! The trick mousse is to use enough for your hair, even a little bit more than you think you need for the proper hold and style. Moose has a light enough consistency that when you don't have enough, your hair may just eat it up.

Then, use a blow dryer with a diffuser (for wavy styles) or a concentrated nozzle with a round brush (for straighter styles), I like using the T3 myself, but most importantly, point the dryer away from your roots. If not, you will probably see some unwelcome frizz.

Once hair is dry, put on more mousse. Focus product mostly on the middle parts of the hair with left-overs on the ends and roots. It may be contrary from what you may have heard, but it will give you more control. This will make it look like you have 5 times more hair. Use your fingers to work in your style instead of a comb or brush. These simple techniques will give you a clean look, that's not completely undone, but softly structured. Who likes running their fingers through stiff hair, right? Ready? Now go work your model Holiday hair, girl!

Fez Studio

1125 NW 9th Ave

Portland, OR 97209

Business Class

I work with many professional clients who couldn't be bothered with make up when they first come in. However, these same women usually become the best advertisements for what a polished makeup look can do for one's confidence and career.

When you perceive yourself in a better light, you are more confident and the world takes notice. With that said, there's a difference between looking polished and looking overdone. At the same time, a natural, refined look does not mean flat.

Makeup in a professional workplace generally works best when it's more low key, but subtly enhance your features. The first step to your polished look should be to even out your skin with foundation in your preferred formula and more importantly, your correct shade. It may be surprising to some, but not every line is going to carry your shade, so don't settle or give in to pressure from sales people when there is no match. This is why I choose to work with three different lines that offers matches for various undertones.

Cheeks

When it comes to cheek color, I wouldn't go more than two shades darker than your natural skin tone. Stick to earthier, close-to-flesh tones. Of course, there are no rules. This is just a suggestion for a work day setting. If you have darker skin tones, go a couple colors more vivid, because you will drab your skin out by making it darker. Apply with a light of had, just enough until you see that bit of color.

Eyes

It should be about definition. I would focus the lining on the top lashline. A lot of people feel naked unless they line around the entire top ad bottom. If you do line the bottom, please don't make it as bold as the top (this also applies to mascara). After the line has bee drawn, smudge it to give it a more natural effect. Then, use a neutral shadow to subtly enhance the eyes without taking away from the definition. Don't forget the brows!

Lips

Keep them lined and defined. I suggest filling the lip in with color because you don't always have time to touch up. You want an even color base on your lips and for lip color to adhere to, as opposed to seeing an outline once things fade. Avoid shades that are too matte and flat. It makes the lips look old and they are so dated. Opt for colors that have high pigment yet allows some of your natural lip color and texture to show through. Not only will your lips look healthier, but it will seem like you look great without even trying.

It's all about balance. You want to define and balance your features out so others will notice your strong presence as a whole. Your pulled-together look may even be part of the reason for your future promotion.

To replicate this look:

Foundation: Creme-to-powder foundation for sensitive skin in Lily

Cheeks: La Bella Donna Blush in Brick

Eyes: Julie Hewett Los Angeles Palette in Soiree. Eyeliner in Smudge. Rose scented mascara in Black.

Brows: Kevyn Aucoin the Precision Brow Pencil

Lips: Julie Hewett Los Angeles liner in Hue # 004 (for a warm pink base a bit deeper than her natural lip tone) and lipstick in Biba (a sheer nude).

Fix: For those of you who are not familiar with his name, he is an up-and-coming singer/musician from Denmark who
is definitely making waves despite the fact that he is an independent artist.

While music is such an individual thing, you will find that his eclectic pop style exemplifies a fusion of
European pop well.

I am especially amazed that Allan manages to remain down-to-earth and keeps his great sense of humor, as I am sure you will discover for yourself. His support for independent artists is also to be commended as being an independent store owner, I can certainly relate. I'm proud to consider him a friend. Enjoy!

1. Like makeup or wardrobe, feel free to change it up from day to night or summer to winter.

The worst offense is when someone buys a fragrance solely based on the celebrity who endorse it or based on a brand name or advertisement. Who wants to wear what everyone else is wearing? It generally smells generic, and it certainly doesn't speak to your uniqueness. Would you have someone say, "You smell absolutely amazing" or "is that (brand x) you're wearing?"

With that said, here are a few tips that will help you to find your next unique essence. The strength of smells varies with the humidity, percentage of essential oils and how much they’re diluted. The difference between Eau de Parfum and Eau de Toilette is that Eau de Parfum has a higher percentage of essentials.

Also available are water-based fragrances. The main benefit I have noticed from this category that we carry, is that there is no alcohol that can interfere with drying or interaction time on your skin. You can also more easily custom mix these fragrances and still not have them be too heavy or strong.

Fragrances consist of three notes: top (what you smell after application), middle, and base. The middle and mostly the base notes are those that mainly interact with your skin chemistry. In my opinion, the best fragrances are those in which the three notes vary enough to almost constitute their own fragrance, but complement each other in a way that gives the scent its rare complexity.

To make the most of YOUR scent, it's not a matter of covering yourself with it, but rather using enough to know that it's there and making an impact. It's more intoxicating to leave that lingering veil with them as you pass by as opposed to being too overpowering. Try walking into a scent or misting your hairbrush before it touches your hair. Also very effective is to apply the fragrance to your pulse points such as the neck, cleavage, wrists and folds of elbows and knees. Never rub in a fragrance.

Hopefully, now that I have convinced you not to buy scents based on marketing and popular hype, choosing one that's right for you has to account for your personality... among other factors. The majority of perfumes on the market are generally divided into five categories, such as floral, fruity, woodsy, oceanic or oriental.

However, since I have a knack for the unique, we also carry those inventive creations called symphonies (a balanced fusion of fruit and floral), invitation to voyage (combining Eastern sensuality Islands exotics, and scents of Sweet Italian summers), and primal scents (based on pure natural scents of memory-evoking elements) among many others.

To find a category that fits you best, ask yourself, "what smells am I drawn to?" Do you prefer something that reminds you of a lush rose garden, a breezy ocean, or fresh pines? Are you more outgoing or mysterious? Do you want your perfume to convey pprofessionalism, power and strength or an accessible girl next door? Determine the scents that have the biggest impact on you and look for them in a perfume.

If you need extra help, you will probably have your best luck in more independent locations that focuses more on uniqueness and knowledge than marketing, hype or commission. Those who are knowledgeable can even tell you the proper ways to store your purchase to keep the product quality for as long as possible.

Feel free to come in with a list of descriptions of what you like, no matter how strange it may seem. Do you like smells of tomato vines, burning leaves, old books, white flowers or orange groves? Bring them over and have fun choosing your best options. You may even discover something new about yourself.

If you would like me to personally help you uncover your fragrance personality or would like me to help you select the perfect gift for your loved one, you are welcome to e-mail me at fezbeauty@gmail .com. Only a regular 35mm camera was used. No photo shop or special lighting was involved. Just makeup, hair, click and done!

I strongly feel that makeup is not a frivolous thing. Even though it is a lot of fun to bring out your artistic side and play with color, it can also work wonders by increasing confidence, and inspiring one relate to the world in a more positive way.

I look forward to seeing each and everyone of you, and who knows, you could be a FEZ Model too!

What I noticed about my first featured client and friend is how full of life and laughter she is. She's obviously beautiful, but does not focus on it or even seem to know it. Another surprise is how raunchy her humor can be. However, she's always tasteful. Ever since our first meeting, she told me that she would never want to work with anyone else because I seem to know how bring out who aspects of who she wants to be in her looks. I hope you can see a part of who she is in this photo.

Here's how I achieved this classic, yet polished look for Danni:

1. I used the Kevyn Aucoin Sensual Skin Primer as a base to even out pores, or any uneven texture in the skin to give it a smooth canvas for makeup.

2. Next the Julie Hewett Creme Foundation for Sensitive Skin in Lily was applied with her foundation brush to even out redness and unevenness. it was then, buffed into the skin with a sponge.

3. The Kevyn Aucoin Sensual Skin Enhancer (the best concealer EVER!) was applied mainly under the eyes, around the lower nose ad lip area for extra perfection with the Kevyn Aucoin Sculpting brush (perfect for giving concealer an airbrushed look). For smaller areas, the precise Kevyn Aucoin Concealer brush was used.

4. I set the makeup with the Julie Hewett Ora Mineral Mix Translucent Oat Powder.

5. Next, I used the Julie Hewett Cheekie in Jami for cheeks, lips and eyes on the apples of her cheeks and blended it out to her hairline with the Julie Hewett Concealer Brush. I also used this color on the eyes as a base color and applied it from lash line to the upper crease. Next I dabbed it onto the lips for some moisturizing and to give it an even base of color.

6. The cheek color was then enhanced with the Julie Hewett Bud of Rose Blush (a natural pink/peach glow).

7. For the eyes, the Kevyn Aucoin Essential Eye Shadow Set Palette #1 was used. The white sheen was used as a highlighter under the brow bone. The light and medium brown from the palette was mixed for a more dimensional brown and applied to the lid. Then, blend, blend, blend. The brush you use depends on how intense you want the shadow to apply on the lid. Like an artist who paints on a canvas, QUALITY brushes are very, very important as each brush serves a purpose. This will also give you the most professional finish.

8. The Kevyn Aucoin Eye Pencil Primatif in Basic Black was applied to the lash line around the eyes and then smudged for a more natural effect. Them, I applied the darkest color from the eye palette over the liner and smudged it even more.

9. Danni's lashes stick straight and down, so we used the Kevyn Aucoin Eyelash Curler (that she described as the most luxurious and comfortable curler she ever used) to open up her eyes. Then, just one coat of the Kevyn Aucoin Curling Mascara in Rich Pitch Black was applied mostly concentrating on the upper lashes. The lower lash line was only lightly done.

10. The brows were defined with the Kevyn Aucoin Precision Brow Pencil. I love the way I can adjust the color of this product by just varying the pressure of my hand.

11. Lips were lined with the Kevyn Aucoin Flesh Tone Lip Pencil and the Elegant Lip Gloss in Anastasia was applied to the lips with the Precise Kevyn Aucoin Lip Brush. Lips were blotted to leave a stain before a second layer was applied. Then, it was lightly blotted again to give the soft sheen you see.

12. For the finishing touch, we enhanced her glow by applying the Julie Hewett Ora Mineral Mix in Bronze around her hairline, temples, cheeks, chin and nose. The Kevyn Aucoin Celestial Powder in Candlelight was applied to the upper cheeks for natural luminescence.

For her hair, we used:

1. The David Gardner Hair Relax and Shine on damp hair from root to ends and simply blow dried with a large round brush.

2. David Gardner Gloss Drops were applied to the ends and

3. Hair was sprayed with the David Gardner Shine Me Spray Shine Mist (this is a Miracle for enhancing golden tones in blond hair as well).

Viola, there you have it! I know reading the step-by-step details seems like it would take forever. However, once you get to it, you will find it takes very little time to achieve this look. Experiment, think outside of the box, and most of all, HAVE FUN!

Fez Studio

1125 NW 9th Ave

Portland, OR 97209

Product Spotlight - The Liquid Airbrush

In the first of our Product Spotlight series, I decided to begin with makeup to help get your canvas flawless just in time for the holiday season.

The Kevyn Aucoin Liquid Airbrush Foundation is loved by many of my clients because it perfects your skin with a wash of beautiful sheer to medium coverage.

Infused with soy, this liquid foundation completely evens out your skin tone while creating a soft, buffed effect...ultimately helping you to achieve your most flawless skin. The food was just about wiped out and we even had husbands involved with makeovers! That was quite interesting to see! People from different walks of life (including models, accountants, event planners, architects, and photographers) seem to talk effortlessly as they got to know their neighbors.

Of course, seeing people's extremely positive reactions after a makeover was extra special for me. To hear women say they've never imagined they could look a certain way and they have not seen such a difference in their life means so much. He has launched a top-of-the-line hair care line that has incorporated his 20+ of experience in the industry and years of research. Recently, David had a chance to sit down to share how he created the hairstyle for one of my favorite photos of Katie Holmes. For best results, use the specified products and get that "Hot Body" you've been waiting for!

1. Begin with a clean head of hair. Use my Shampoo (Weightless Shampoo) depending on hair type to remove all debris and left over styling products for this or any hair style with body.

2. Condition lightly so as not to have the hair too soft, use my Daily Conditioner (Thick and Clear) for that.

3. Use my Magical Mousse, apply as directed to wet hair and comb through. Blow dry the hair with your head upside down until it is damp.

4. Start to section off the hair, blow dry each section with a large round brush starting at the nape of the neck and spritzing each section with a shot of Hot Body.

5. When each section is dry put it in a Velcro roller. Pin the whole head like this and then spray with Hold Me Hairspray.

Do your makeup and get dressed for your hot night out.

Then take out all the rollers and gently run your fingers through your hair. Remember that the more you play the flatter it will get! If it is really curly and too big you can gently brush through for that movie star look.

6. Finally spray a little Shine Me, lightly from a foot away and if you have crazy thick hair a tiny drop of Gloss Drops for the ends will do wonders.

7. Run your fingers through your hair and go.

GORGEOUS!

My special thanks to our guest contributor David Gardner. For our first conversation, we got in touch with Bill Macfarlane, a busy (and always well-groomed) event promoter here in Portland, to get his unique perspective on beauty, grooming and style.

1. What is your definition of beauty?
Beauty is truly in the eye of the beholder. It is everywhere around us, in the smallest of details, yet we don't always take the time to notice it. But one thing that can bring out the beauty in anyone is confidence.

2. You just got married to your wife, Stephanie, not too long ago. Congratulations and sorry girls! What was it about her that took you out of the bachelor life?

Her zest for life, her fresh outlook on things and openness to new ideas, her trust in me, and of course her confidence!

3. I understand you traveled through Europe for your honeymoon. Did you notice any general or classifiable differences between the beauty preferences and styles of the women of the various countries? What about in comparison with those of women in the US? You might have to ask Steph this. We traveled through 7 countries and 13 cities in a month, so we experienced many different cultures and styles. One common theme I saw was what I call "effortless beauty and style". Whether that style is freshness and easygoing beauty out on the beach in Ibiza, or tasteful elegance for a night out at the Casino in Monte Carlo, the Europeans seem to have a style and flair about them that comes easily. Again, I think this comes back to the confidence in one's self. A familiarity with what "Works" for one's self is a must. In the US, I see many people wearing what they are told to wear, not what works for them. Develop a personal style instead of copying what's in a magazine.

4. In your line of work, I am sure you come across many women and men. For those who are not familiar, what do you do and what do you feel is the most common beauty or grooming mistake you see out there?I promote for events, so I see a lot of people all done up and ready to be seen. But what I see way too much of is sameness. Lack of flair. It doesn't take too much to add a bit of personal style to your wardrobe. Do something to stand out from the droves of guys in striped dress shirts and jeans sporting spikey hair!

5. What is your personal grooming routine?

Grooming is very important. I use a mild face soap morning and night, and moisturize as well. Use sunscreen in the summer months. Don't skip the night time wash! If you sleep on a pillow with dirty residue from your face, you're just asking for skin problems!

If you were stuck on a desert island, what three grooming products would you have with you?Sunscreen, mild soap and moisturizer.

6. What does Stephanie feel is the most beautiful about you?

Oddly enough, when I asked her, she said confidence! Funny how great minds think alike, no?

7. What does she feel you need to work on?

We both agree I need to get my abs back. They seem to have faded a bit in the last few years :-)

8. How much influence does your wife have on your style? I understand you were Posh and Becks once for a Halloween party...very fitting.

Funny - I actually came up with that idea. In fact I help her with a lot of her style choices. I go shopping with her and act as a sounding board, and give her ideas she hadn't thought of, and she does the same for me.

9. Speaking of which, how do you define your personal style?

Adaptable, with just a bit of flair. I like to stand out, but not in a "did you see THAT guy" kind of way. Just a little something different, whether it's wearing the family tartan kilt instead of a tux at a formal event, or an Elvis costume at a theme party.

10. What is the biggest splurge you have spent on grooming/style?

Black Prada Technofabric suit. Every man should own a nice black suit. This one has a hard finish, but is slightly stretchy. This thing is incredibly comfortable and looks like a million bucks.

11. Who is your style icon?

Hmmm. I can't pin it down to just one, and in fact it changes. Lately I've been liking David Beckham's style - because he has the confidence to try new things. I like Calvin Klein for classic stuff - clean lines and trim fit. I may pick up a new idea from someone just walking down the street.

12. What advice do you have for women or men out there in terms of beauty or image? Develop your own personal style. Take bits and pieces from various places and make it your own. Don't be afraid to add a little tasteful flair to your personal style.Stay fit and take care of your body and skin. Fitness and good health will never go out of style!

Our very special thanks to guest contributor, Bill Macfarlane.

Suggested Products:

a/MEN/ity Gel Face Cleanser with liposomal vitamins and

the After Shave and face Moisturizer

Urth for Men Face Balm SPF 15 and the Green Tea and Rice Scrub.

FEZ Studio

1125 NW 9th Ave, Suite 108, Portland, OR 97209

(503) 227-2226

Forever Tan (without the damage)

One of the top questions I have been asked is, "how do I look like I still have a natural tan in the winter months."

For this post, I will focus on a natural-looking tan on the face. Here are some proven tips which will give you your best results:

FACE

Please, please, please, do not use a foundation darker than your natural skin tone to try to give yourself an appearance of a tan (unless your body skin is quite a bit darker than your facial skin). Use powder bronzing products instead.

Skip the shimmer - Okay, who tans in shimmer? I certainly don't. For the most natural look, go for a matte powder bronzer a couple of shades darker than your natural skin tone. Just because it says bronzer doesn't mean it will work with your skin coloring. There are those with warm, red and rosy undertones, for example, so please choose one that most complements you.

Soft Lighting - Lightly buff onto cheeks, forehead, nose and chin (where the sun would normally touch your face) and blend into the skin. Please remember to be light of hand. It's always easier to build up intensity with several light applications than to take away streaks.

Go Bright - For the most believable glow, use a bit of blush with a lighter pinky peach undertone. Many people are surprised by this. However, think back to I time when you notice that nice, glowing tan on your face from being out in the sun (with sunscreen, of course) and going, "Daing, I look gooooooooooooooood!" I hate to be the one to tell you this, but that's most likely a bit of a sunburn. However, the perfect pink or peach blush (depending on your skin tone) will replicate that look without the damage. The best trick for this is just to smile and place the blush on the apples (the fleshy part) of the cheek. It will also keep your bronzed skin from looking too drab, which may be a danger for some who use too much brown on their skin

For those who still want shimmer, feel free to put a bit on the upper part of the cheek.

Voila! Your perfect, natural tan all year round! I'd be happy to help if you have any further questions or need color advice.

Get the Forever Tan look.

Skin: Kate Somerville Total Vitamin Serum (skincare that enhances the glow of a tan) and Kevyn Aucoin Sensual Skin Primer

Face: Kevyn Aucoin Senusal SKin Enhancer (concealer) in SX 09, Airbrush Foundation in LQ 09, Gossamer Loose Powder in Radiant Diaphonous. Think about how you want to see yourself in photos and how you want to remember looking (and feeling) for years to come. It is also a chance to be pampered and not have to stress out about one more thing.

However, I understand that for various reasons, some may choose to do her own makeup. I have decided to post some advice inspired by FAQ from my brides and the fact that one of our good friend's family member just got engaged. If you are reading this, congratulations, again!

1. Like any important event, please practice your makeup ahead of time to prevent being stressed about your look if something should not work as you planned. I suggest trying the finished makeup look with the dress as well because depending on the dress, it may not complement the makeup as well as you may think.

2. Balance eye, lip and cheek colors for the most finished look. This does not mean use the same colors, but make sure they have the same tonal value and strength.

3. When doing your eyes, if you choose to use shimmer (think sparkle) or sheen (think cream or gloss), place the shine product either on the lid or under the brow bone -not both. This is especially important when flash photography is used because when shine is overemphasized around the eyes, you may get the disco ball effect. When shine is placed just on the lid, for example, it will give a beautiful ethereal glow to your eyes in photos.

4. Be aware of the differet lighting situations you may be in as you will need to adjust your makeup accordingly. Whether it's indoors or outdoors, lighting definitely affects how makeup colors appear. One reason more vivid applications are used for evening makeup is so skin will not look washed-out. Whether natural or artificial light has more red, blue, or yellow tonal values also plays an important role.

If you do decide to use professional services, please make sure they provide detailed consultation that addresses your specific needs. It should also include a trial run through of your makeup. Personally, I take test shots of different looks so if this is not offered, please take along your camera.

I should be adding more tidbits in the near future, but I hope this was helpful for you. If you have any further questions, I'd be happy to hear from you.

Get this luminous Winter Bride Look (available at FEZ Studio - 503-227-2226)

Skin: Primed with Kate Somerville Gentle Daily Wash, Kate in a Jar, Quench Hydrating Serum (essential for smooth, flawless, glowing skin), Deep Tissue Repair, and Line Release Eye Cream.

Face: Kevyn Aucoin The Dew Drop Foundation, Sensual Skin Enhancer and Gossamer Loose Powder.
